Rounding Out October on the Ranch

We had a really special gathering for Miles this week. It was a beautiful, chilly October afternoon and all of Miles' family and friends came to remember him. One of his absolute favorite things to do was to carve pumpkins, so we all gathered together and carved countless pumpkins in his honor.

A group of us gave his mom, Joy, a guardian angel necklace that she can wear everyday as a special symbol of him <3 We love you, Joy! We think of Miles everyday and I can’t believe it’s been a year without his bright, smiling, hilarious personality. We miss you Miles and will never forget what you brought to our lives.

During the week we spent the mornings on the ranch checking cows and tagging some big, healthy, new calves. We took some rides to the rock pit to move some more dirt for a big project coming up. I logged some hours in my shop looking at new samples for Five Marys goods and sent a weekly email to my M5 Entrepreneurs with some small business tips.

I did some cooking and made a delicious (and easy!) Five Marys steak dinner and we spent nights watching the girls rope in the arena. One night while the girls headed to the local highschool football game, a tire busted on the feed wagon, so I helped… (okay, watched!) Brian fix it so he could feed his cows at daybreak the next morning. I actually really love the weeks that are spent at home just doing mundane tasks.

Towards the end of the week the weather changed and it it feels like winter really is on the way! We started having some cold mornings on the ranch (18 degrees F this morning!). The sun is setting earlier and earlier… we had a beautiful sunset checking cows and wrapped up closing the gates after dark. We are counting the days that the grass on our pastures will last to feed the cattle before we juice up the feed truck and start feeding cows and sheep twice a day - morning and night.

I’m feeling ready for jumping across the old broken seats to drive the feed truck for Brian as he throws hay :) It’s a lot of work but some of my favorite times on the ranch.

The roping arena cook area came together this season and was so much fun to cook and entertain while the girls roped. We’ve got plenty of open flame options here to hopefully keep cooking through the winter too! We’ll see how hardcore we are… it was a 14 degrees F morning on the last day of the month! I hope you all enjoyed October and have a great start to the new month! :)
