Mary's Green Juice & Detox Tonic

“Green Juice” is one of my favorite morning drinks – it’s fresh, satisfying and I promise actually tastes DELICIOUS! It’s easy to make, but since the juicer clean up is a little bit of a chore – I like to make a big batch (4x the recipe below) and store in airtight jars in the fridge. Brian and I grab some each morning and it lasts all week!

MY FAVORITE GREEN JUICE

INGREDIENTS

  • 6 apples

  • 1 cucumber

  • 4 celery stalks

  • 4 sprigs of mint

  • 2 handfuls of spinach

  • 1 Meyer lemon

  • 1 small piece of ginger

  • 1 small piece of turmeric

  • optional: jalapeños

This recipe is completely flexible! Feel free to add any of your favorite ingredients, and subtract any that you don’t like. The proportions are also flexible, just keep adding until you get a quarts worth of juice!

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut your apples, cucumber, and lemon into sizes that work best for your juicer. Add the ingredients to the juicer one by one. We find that it’s easier to add an apple after the leafy ingredients to ensure that they juice properly.

Once you have juiced all the ingredients, grab a second jar or cup and pour the juice back and forth between them until it is sufficiently blended and even in color. Scoop off any foam that has collected at the top. Store it in the fridge for up to five days, and enjoy!

DETOX TONIC

I love making this detox tonic after being out of town for a bit! We just got back from two family reunions, so I’m making this summer vacation detox green juice this week for a healthy reset.

INGREDIENTS

This recipe for a tonic is also VERY flexible with what ingredients you have on hand and what your preferences are for taste!

I used 1 large ginger root, 6-8 medium tumeric pieces, 5 meyer lemons, 3 jalapenos, no garlic, a cup of AVC, a big spoonful of raw honey, a teaspoon of fine sea salt, a cup of pure aloe vera juice and a some mineral drops. I add the Chrlorophyll when I mix it with water each day!

  • ginger

  • turmeric

  • lemons

  • jalapeño

  • garlic (optional - if you can handle the taste!)

  • apple cider vinegar

  • raw honey

  • good quality sea salt (optional)

  • add-ins that you like (I use aloe vera juice and chlorophyll drops!)

  • 5-8 cups distilled water

INSTRUCTIONS

Roughly chop ginger, turmeric, lemon, jalapeño, and garlic and bring to a boil in 8-10 cups water (filtered water if possible).

Turn off and let cool - use a sieve to strain water into a large glass container.

After it is cool, add apple cider vinegar, honey and squeeze in lemons to taste (I used 4 Meyer lemons).

Add in good quality sea salt to taste and any of your add-ins!

I also sometimes like to use cayenne pepper for an extra kick.

Keep the tonic in your fridge and add a half cup to a large glass of water each morning. Add more honey or lemon to taste if you’d like and I love to add a teaspoon to tablespoon of chlorophyll drops each day - you loose that pretty yellow color but it’s a great detox addition!

MY FAVORITE JUICERS

I love this Breville Juice Fountain Cold Plus. It costs about $300, but a really nice high-quality juicer for home. Some juicers can be so big - this one is a really nice size and doesn’t take up too much counter space.

The best of both worlds! The Breville 3X Bluicer is a great juicer for it you like smoothies too :)

My favorite juicer! I LOVE this heavy duty commercial quality, PROFESSIONAL CENTRIFUGAL JUICER BY WARING. I’ve tried a lot of them and this one holds up the best, it’s easy to clean and a real powerhouse. It’s usually around $699, so it’s an investment! But if you are going to juice often or want one that will never break – this is your juicer.
